Settings, Visualizations, and Turkey Math

This week , in the Gentleness Fruit Stand, we learned a great deal about using vivid verbs adjectives to help readers transport themselves into the setting of a story or book.  Check out our oil pastel drawings for the depiction of the scene we began last week in Chapter 2 of Amos Fortune, Free Man.  Even though our pictures were all very different, they shared similar characteristics.  This showed us that as readers, we use our own imaginations to visualize settings from the author’s description.

We are exploring the world of “Multiple Step Word Problems Involving Whole Numbers With Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication and Division”.  We used the “Sleepy E Method” to diagram a lengthy word problem and discern the correct operations to use to answer the final question.  We decided that the use of Turkeys and Popular Characters would be cool.  Check out some of our pictures from this week.

Thanks so much for these awesome weekly blog posts, Mrs. Moore! It’s so nice to see what Scarlett’s been up to in class, and to have detailed descriptions of the week’s activities. Fifth grade looks like a place where learning is fun and exciting! Keep up the fabulous work!
