Learn about leaders in History who displayed “Gentleness”, and about leaders who were horrible! View projects, play games, and see what the Fifth Graders in the Gentleness Fruit Stand have learned this quarter!

Allegory? Analogy? Tears? We need C.P.R. !!!

Our hearts were broken, and some needed tissues to wipe away the tears, as we read chapter 14, “The Triumph of the Witch”. We have decided that The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobemust be an allegory, paralleling the crucifixion of our Lord. Just when we had grown to love the character of Aslan, the strong, fierce, yet beloved lion, he becomes a sacrifice on the Stone Table in order to save brother Edmund’s life. What heartfelt and beautiful discussions this book has initiated this week. Our discussion of the ultimate sacrifice that Jesus made for us on the cross to save us from our sin, drew us closer to Him this week. Our discussions also drew us closer to one another as Christians, working together to live as Christ would have us live, and sharing His story with others.

Wow! We needed C.P.R.! — “Circle of Power and Respect”– Each week, one fifth grader is our C.P.R. leader. That person leads and serves. During C.P.R. time in the morning, our leader facilitates the discussion as we share prayer requests and praises. He or she also leads in prayer, runs errands for the class, washes cafeteria tables, and helps us “bear fruit”. He or she also chooses the C.P.R. person for the next week.

Well, in addition to reading and sharing prayers/ praises, we completed our decimal A.C.O. on converting decimals to fractions and fractions to decimals.  Just when things were going well, our teacher decided to throw in a sixth grade skill that she knew we could handle. Percentages!!!!   Agh!!!!  We did a “Walk-About” in the hallway to help us figure out the relationships between fractions, decimals, and percentages. We took our final test on these skills today.  Whew!!!

We also took our final test on all of the “Matter” ACOs.

I am looking forward to meeting with parents on Monday to talk about progress thus far. In addition to our discussion of Academic Growth, we will talk about Spiritual Growth and Social Growth.

A “Mixture” of “Authors” and “Arthurs”

The Saints in the Gentleness Fruit Stand have been busy this week learning about English History. From the ancient people who constructed Stonehenge, to the Knights of King Arthur, and on to the madness of King Henry the Sixth, whose wife made some very poor decisions! (This was certainly not a time of showing Gentleness.)

We enjoyed our visit to Suffolk Christian Academy to meet Christian author, Jenny L. Cote. We learned about her “ROAD” to writing, and we were able to purchase several signed copies of her books! Several of our Fifth Grade Saints have now decided that Mrs. Cote is one of their favorite authors.

Our Saintly Scientists are constructing “Mixture Pyramids” to illustrate the concepts of mixtures, solutions, heterogeneous and homogeneous solutions, compounds, and physical vs. chemical changes. We also learned that density is mass divided by volume. Hmmm…? We now know why a beach ball floats, but a golf ball sinks!

As we continue reading The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, we are beginning to see why our theme for this quarter is “Gentleness Reborn”. We’ve experienced a “foreshadowing” of events to come and have been introduced to the character of Aslan through ancient prophesies. We are so engrossed in this story and are experiencing mysteriously wonderful, yet fearful feelings of anticipation, just as the characters in the book are experiencing!
