“Thinking Caps” and “Thinking Maps”

This week the Saints in our Gentleness Fruit Stand put on their “Thinking Caps” and  constructed “Double Bubble Thinking Maps”, following the reading of “A Day With The Beavers” (chapter 5 of The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe).

They created mental visual patterns for comparing and contrasting two settings from the book. The character “Lucy” visited the cave of Mr. Tumnus, and all four Pevensie children visited the home of Mr. and Mrs. Beaver.  After rereading the text in paragraph form, the students “mapped out” their thoughts about similarities and differences with erasable markers on large, laminated mats concerning aspects of both settings.  They were then able to transfer their ideas onto permanent double bubble maps to make clearer connections to the text.

Check out some of the pictures— Reading on bean bags with Kindles and working on “Thinking Mats” for “Double Bubble Thinking Maps”!

From “States of Matter” to “States of the Union”

What a “stately” week we have had in the Gentleness Fruit Stand!

During Science, we continued to investigate the three “states of matter” — melting points, boiling points, elements, molecules, mixtures, and solutions — Wow!

But… the “stately experience” we enjoyed the most, was our  Constitution Day celebrations with the Mayor of Portsmouth!  Mayor Wright told us how the U.S. Constitution affects our daily lives.  He answered our questions and listened to what we had to say about our study of the U.S. Constitution. Our mayor emphasized what we have been learning this week too. ” God placed those men (our forefathers) together at that particular place and time to accomplish His will.  We have the freedom in this country to worship God- a freedom that does not exist in many other places in the world.

We were excited to recite the Preamble to the U.S. Constitution, Perform a Poem about the Constitution, and to sing our National Anthem for the mayor.

Even though Constitution Day was the highlight of our week, we did not forget to work with Decimals in Math, work with words in spelling/ language, and discover “Gentleness Reborn” with our class novel, The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe”.

May God Bless.  Have a wonderful weekend!

Time Flies When We’re Having Fun!!!

Yes!  The fifth graders in the Gentleness Fruit Stand are learning- and having fun in the process!  This week our study of the Bible and how it was inspired (God breathed), has led us to some wonderful discoveries about being workers, presenting ourselves to God, and sharing the truth about His word. We came up with a rap song about this week’s scripture- 2 Timothy 2:15.

To help our brains focus and meet maximum potential, we learned some “brain exercises” that were loads of fun.  We included a couple of pictures on our blog of these exercises.

Math this week was all about DECIMALS!  We cut-out pictures of decimal number representations and made decimal numbers on  our desktops after watching some watched some funny decimal rap videos.

And… Next Wednesday is Constitution Day!  The 227th anniversary of the signing of the U.S. Constitution.  We have been learning all about James Madison (the Father of the Constitution) and about the Constitutional Convention.  In Music Class we have been practicing “The Star- Spangled Banner” and learning about its history.  In Art Class we drew patriotic pictures with oil pastels.

Stay tuned next week for some cool..and hot information as we discover how temperature changes states of matter.  Until next week…Have a safe and blessed weekend!

The Second Week Was Twice As Nice!!!

Well, I thought our first week back to school was awesome, but…  The second week was Twice as Nice!  We are beginning some “meaty” subject matter and rising to the challenge that lies ahead of us to master some difficult concepts.

The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe is quickly becoming our favorite book!  When we get to the end of each chapter, we are sitting on the edges of  our beanbag chairs with bated breath in anticipation of what will happen next!  The student saints never want to stop reading!  Wow!  I’m in awe of them!

Geography is tough!  We are learning fine- tuning our skills on longitude and “latitude with attitude”!  We are “traveling” to countries all over the world and pinpointing their absolute location on the world map.  Oh, the places we’ve been!

We began our “Circle of Power and Respect”  (C.P.R) time each morning, and we are learning how to share exciting news and request prayer for things that God has placed on our hearts.  Stay tuned as we share pictures next week of our projects centered around the Old Testament and the Truth of God’s word.

See you soon!
